Frequently Asked Questions
What are essential fatty acids? They are essential nutrients, just like vitamins and minerals are. Alpha-linolenic acid (or ALA) is the essential omega-3 fatty acid and Linoleic Acid (or LA) is the essential omega-6 fatty acid. ALA can be found in any Flora product that has flax oil in it. LA can be found in Flora products that have sesame, sunflower or pumpkin oil. Without sufficient amounts of these in the diet, our growth and development, cardiovascular, brain, skin and immune health can all suffer. We generally need to increase our omega-3 intake (as it’s found in fewer food sources) and replace damaged, processed sources of ALA and LA with ones made with health in mind.
Flora and Udo Erasmus pioneered making oils with health in mind in the late 1980s/early 1990s. We’ve long known that seed oils need to be created with care and wanted to be able to provide an alternative to toxic, heated and processed oils that are commonly sold in plastic bottle and made with shelf life in mind. Flora created a custom, expeller press for the seeds that protects the oil from heat, light and oxygen. We do not have any need to process, refine or subject these oils to any chemicals or solvents. We were also one of the first to bottle in glass, rather than plastic.
It’s almost impossible to get anything but the bare minimum to avoid outright deficiency of the omega-3 essential fatty acid ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) from food. It simply isn’t found in much quantity in our diets. Walnuts and flax seed, ALA fortified eggs and grass-fed beef are some sources. For vegetarians and vegans this will be almost impossible. It’s far easier to get an easy, guaranteed source like flax oil or Udo’s Oil. These can provide amounts of ALA more optimal for health, instead of just scraping by and avoiding deficiency in this essential fat.
